The Virgin Islands Diabetes Prevention and Control
Programs (VIDPCP) is organized around several national as well as
local goals and objectives which include:
1. Increasing the percentage of persons with
diabetes in the VI receiving foot exams
2. Increasing the percentage of persons with diabetes in the VI
receiving eye exams
3. Increasing the percentage of persons with diabetes in the VI
who receive influenza and pneumococcal vaccines
4. Increasing the percentage of persons with diabetes in the VI
who receive A1c tests
5. Reducing health disparities for high risk populations through
diabetes prevalence and control
6. Establishing useful programs for the promotion of wellness, physical
activity, weight, blood pressure control and smoking cessation for
persons with diabetes
7. Develop a process for continuous performance improvement for
the V.I. State Diabetes Public Health System (SDPHS)
Funding for the VIDPCP has been received from
the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) since 1997.
Through this funding, the VIDPCP has supported the following program
and activities:
o Annual Diabetes Awareness Fairs
o Diabetes Today (A community-based curriculum)
o National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) Campaigns
o The Virgin Islands Diabetes Advisory Council
o CDC Flu Campaign
o Professional Education Seminars & Workshops
o Diabetes Self-Management Education
o Specialized Media Campaigns
